“All for one and one for all” was the mantra that started the Buddhist culture in India. With around 1 million Buddhist followers in the world, India too has its share of influence and enlightenment by Buddhism. To be at peace and have a sorted state of mind, Buddhist chants are said to be the best treatment. India, being a place of multi-religion culture, has major Buddhist pilgrimage places listed below.

  • Lumbini– Situated at the India-Nepal border, Lumbini is an important place for Buddhist pilgrims. The place holds utmost importance to Buddhism followers because Lord Buddha was born here during the 556 B.C. The place has a Buddhist stupa and a Bodhi tree that marks the existence of Lord Buddha’s presence in that area.
  • Bodhgaya– Bodhgaya is the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment through a 4-day meditation process. This place has the Bodhi tree that is a symbol of Buddhism spirituality and a Mahabodhi temple that is a Buddhist monastery.
  • Sarnath-The Buddhist followers proclaim their traditional law of faith at Sarnath. The place is located in the Ganges Valley of India, and it is the place where Lord Buddha guided his followers to become noble human being and give up all the pleasures of life. This place has the famous Buddhist monastery with sculptures from that era.
  • Kushinagar– This place is the witness of last days of Lord Buddha where he is believed to have achieved Mahaparinirvana (death). Located in Uttar Pradesh, the place is a lesser known Buddhist pilgrimage place and has a huge sculpture of Lord Buddha in the sleeping posture. The place has Nirvana Stupa Temple and Maha Nirvana temple as tourist attractions.
  • Kapilavastu– Lord Buddha had spent his first twenty-one years of life at this place before he started preaching Buddhism. Situated at a distance of 27 km from Lumbini in Uttar Pradesh, this Buddhist pilgrimage is visited by a large number of Buddhism followers every year.
  • Sanchi– The place was built by the famous ruler Ashoka that become one of the greatest followers of Lord Buddha and started preaching Buddhism later in life. The magnificent stupa building in Sanchi is a world heritage site and a great Buddhist monastery. The place has great Buddhist temples that are visited by the pilgrims every year.
  • Leh-Ladakh– Located in the chilly region of the Himalayan mountain ranges, the place is of great relevance since it is located at the end of the nation and is difficult to reach. It houses two of the most beautiful Buddhist monasteries, The Thikse Monastery, Leh and the Hemis monastery, Ladakh. The two places are epitomes of Buddhism and the teachings of Lord Buddha.
  • Dharamshala– The place houses the famous Buddhist monastery, the Namgyal monastery that is believed to be working in the area of spreading awareness about Buddhism. The place has the whole zeal about Buddhism, and one can site small places dedicated to Lord Buddha. An enormous number of Buddhist followers settle down in Dharamshala to learn about Buddhism.
