There are only a few places in the world which could claim that they have a history as rich as, or even as close as India. India has always been a culturally flourishing and rich country throughout history and the same culture has been passed on to the people of this generation and that can be seen even today. Historically, though, what Indian culture has produced is a series of monumental masterpieces that have been rightly preserved by this generation and have even received the “World heritage site” certifications. Millions and millions of tourists from around the world converge towards the Indian subcontinent every year to marvel at these masterpieces and India, because of her historical brilliance, has become one of the leading tourist places in the entire world.

Although naming all of the stunningly beautiful monumental masterpieces will require pages and pages of documents, here are few of the very best of these structures:

  • The Taj Mahal: This is one of the most famous monuments in the entire world and is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. The Taj Mahal, situated in Agra, is a name synonymous with beauty and was constructed by Shah Jahan as a token of his undying love for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The monument is an epitome of beauty and a great tourist spot for any newly-wed couples.
  • The Red Fort: This is another monument constructed by Shah Jahan. The Red Fort was used as the residence for the Mughal rulers in Delhi until 1857. There are a number of museums inside the Red Fort today that underline its historical use and are famous tourist spots. Today, the fort is used to host national celebrations like the Republic day of India.
  • The India Gate: The India Gate is a memorial that was built in honor of the 82,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army situated in Delhi. It is the Arc de Triumphe of the Indian Subcontinent and is amongst the world heritage sites. It is one of the most visited spots in the country and should be on anyone to-visit list.
  • Humanyun’s Tomb: Humayun’s tomb was constructed in the year 1571 and has been preserved wonderfully to this date. The tomb is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humanyun. Surrounded by lush gardens and flora, the tomb is rightly a World Heritage Site.
  • The Ajanta Caves: The Ajanta caves, located in Maharashtra, is a combination of two phases of which the first one was constructed in the 2nd Century BC. The second of the two phases was finished in the 5th and 6th century BC. The caves are known for their cave paintings and depictions of old paintings and sculptures. The Ajanta caves too, are a World Heritage Site.
  • The Elephanta Caves: The caves located in Maharashtra, इंडिया, were constructed between the 5th and the 8th Centuries BC. Also known as the city of caves, the Ajanta Caves are divided into groups of caves. The first five depict Hindu stone sculptures and paintings while the second group contains the same from the Buddhist religion.
