Jaipur, also known as the Pink City of India, is the capital of Rajasthan and is one of the most frequently visited places in India. The city is known for its beautifully constructed and preserved forts and its vast and beautiful history and culture. The pink city is a wonderful blend of history and rich traditions and this blend can be seen and felt even today.
Languages spoken: Rajasthani, Hindi and English
Rajasthani is the language indigenous to the region and is the most widely spoken language. Most people also know and speak Hindi, so if you know either of these two, you’re good to go.
Clothing:
The traditional attire of the Rajasthani man includes a large turban and colorful kurtas and a dhoti. The entire attire is extremely colorful and expressive. The same two words can be used for the women attire too. The women usually wear Ghaghra, and a traditional top called a Kanchli along with lots of shiny and beautiful jewelry.
Dances:
Rich traditions and rich heritage mean that the region does not lack anywhere in the cultural department. The traditional dance of the people is the “Ghoomar”. Classic folk music sung by men and women accompanies the dancing women, and the dance is truly awe striking. Another form of dance indigenous to the region is called the “Kalbelia” or the snake dance. Folk music of the snake charmers plays along with women dressed in all black to resemble a cobra snake. The entire dance is truly amazing and is a must see for any visitor.
Cuisine:
Rajasthani cuisine is famous all over the country for its rich and its traditional feel. Sarson ka Saag and Bajre ki Roti, made famous by Bollywood dialogs, is the staple food of the region. Other dishes like Daal Bati, Malwa kachori cooked in traditional fashion are mouth-watering, and anyone visiting the place should try and eat only the traditional food. For the desserts, the Rajasthani cuisine gives you the choices of Immartis, which is like a giant Jalebi, DilKhusal, which literally means happy heart surely does not disappoint, and Seero, a traditional halwa of sorts. All dishes, like the culture, in general, are extremely expressive.
Fairs and festivals:
Jaipur is famous for its Camel festival that is held in the month of January every year where events like camel racing and best-dressed camel events are organized. The desert festival too is extremely famous and amongst the major tourist attraction. Held every year in the month of January, high intensity is the theme, and the sheer intensity can be felt in all the music and dance events. Some other famous festivals include the Mewar festival, the Kaila Devi fair, the Kite Festival and the Gangaur fair.
Tourist spots:
If you are visiting for just a few days, you won’t be able to hit all the best spots and places in the region. So take your time and relax. The Hawa Mahal is famous all over the country for its beautiful construction and the way it has been preserved over the years. The city palace is another must-visit place. Mughal and Rajasthani architecture blended to create this beautiful site and should be a must-visit site for anyone. Some of the other top tourist spots are Jaigarh fort, Nahargarh fort, Jai Mahal and Birla Planetarium.
Connectivity:
The capital of Jaipur is well connected by roads, rail, and airways. Most major flights fly in and out of Jaipur. Also, major roads and highways connect Jaipur to other large cities. A plethora of trains can be found from anywhere in the country to Jaipur.
